Ramakrishnan M, Managing Director, Primus Partners, has raised urgent concerns about the accelerating impact of climate change in Kashmir. Citing IPCC data, he emphasized that the region is warming at twice the global average, with ISRO satellite images confirming a 15% shrinkage in glaciers feeding key rivers like the Jhelum. This warming, worsened by reduced snow cover, is causing major agricultural distress. He highlighted how erratic rainfall patterns, water stress, rising pest infestations, and increased farming costs are threatening both apple and paddy farmers in J&K. He recommends for a multifaceted response, including climate-resilient practices, increased R&D, expanded insurance, indoor farming support, and large-scale afforestation to secure the region’s agricultural future.
